Commitment vs. Opportunity: The Job Offer Dilemma

Yuniq - My perspective on life

You accepted an offer from XYZ Corporation—but now ABC comes in with a dream deal. Do you honor your word, or pivot for your future? In this post, I unpack the ethical and professional crossroads many students face when better opportunities knock after commitment.

Although it's thrilling to have a better offer from ABC Corporation, I think we should respect the promise made to XYZ Corporation. From an ethical point of view, being a man of one's word showcases professionalism and integrity—things employers appreciate more than technical skill. From a Kantian standpoint, reneging on the deal treats XYZ as a means to an end, and that's wrong.

But if ABC's future opportunity is much better to your future growth, then it is not wrong to take into consideration, but with keeping transparency. You would have to let XYZ know immediately, explain the reasons respectfully, and genuinely thank them. Even though this may burn a bridge, being honest is better than to regret and be bitter at a new venture.
