Maximize Your Learning: Tips for Academic Success
Yuniq - My perspective on life
In October 2023, I had the opportunity to enhance my academic experience by reaching out to one of my professors for a dedicated one-on-one session. As part of my commitment to deeper learning, I recognized the importance of engaging directly with instructors to seek clarity and further insights beyond the classroom setting.
In this instance, I approached my professor via email, aiming to schedule a brief yet impactful office visit. The primary goal of this session was to discuss key topics that had piqued my interest during lectures, and to ensure that I was fully grasping the material covered.
This step not only highlighted the value of proactive communication in my academic journey but also reinforced the essential skills of professionalism and collaboration within a university environment. It served as a reminder that meaningful learning often starts with the simple act of reaching out for guidance.
I recently had the opportunity to meet with Professor during her office hours to discuss various aspects related to the course and seek valuable insights. The conversation revolved around several key questions, each offering a unique perspective on the course, the professor's experience, and academic success. This report summarizes the questions posed and the responses provided.
What is your best advice for someone to succeed in this course?
Professor emphasized the importance of punctuality and consistent attendance. They highlighted a clear correlation between student attendance and their grades.
What is something that you struggled with in college?
While discussing her personal college experience, Professor mentioned that she faced a unique situation regarding career paths. Most of her peers secured jobs immediately after completing their undergraduate studies. However, professor found solace in academia and did not consider it as a struggle but rather a choice she enjoyed.
What is your career experience, and how does that inform this course or your research?
Professor discussed her extensive background as a high school teacher and the unique insight gained from working with young people. This experience significantly informs her research, aligning with her studies in applied linguistics, which focuses on language acquisition and loss.
How will I be graded in this course, and will there be an end-of-semester written exam?
Professor clarified that there won't be any exams in this course. Students will be graded based on three writing projects, quizzes, mini assignments, and reflection papers throughout the semester.
How should I address self-plagiarism when discussing viewpoints mentioned in my publicly available YouTube video on space tourism in the essay I am writing for this class? Do I need to include citations, or can I write freely without quoting?
Professor advised utilizing the citing resources available in the module section on Canvas. Appropriate citations should be used, including quotation marks for direct phrases or use referencing when paraphrasing.
Should I separate the summary, critique, evaluation, and discussion in my essay’s final submission with respective headings, or combine them into one section?
Professor said that although both the formats are fine, she suggested keeping the summary, critique, evaluation, and discussion as separate sections, as it results in a more organized and comprehensible essay.
The meeting with Professor provided valuable insights into the course structure, academic success, and the professor's unique background that informs her teaching approach. The guidance received will undoubtedly contribute to a successful academic journey in this course.
