Online Reviews vs. Word of Mouth: Who Do You Trust?
Yuniq - My perspective on life
Online reviews can make or break a purchase decision, but how much do we really trust them? Are they more reliable than recommendations from friends and family, or do hidden biases and fake reviews make them less credible? In this post, I explore the impact of online reviews in my consumer choices.
Online reviews play a significant role in my consumer decision-making, especially when purchasing products or choosing services. They provide instant feedback from multiple users, which allows me to gauge overall satisfaction and identify issues. Although online reviews are significant, they are often considered less reliable than recommendations from friends and family.
Online reviews can be biased, forged, or tampered with, with organizations posting false positives or competitors posting negative reviews. In addition, personal experiences vary, and therefore the reviews may not be appropriate for my needs. Nevertheless, friends and relatives provide referrals that are genuine, firsthand, and appropriate to my interests, and their referrals are more trustworthy.
That being said, I still use online reviews by looking for consistency across several sources and not basing my decision on a single review. Combining both word of mouth and online comments allows me to make more informed decisions.
