Reflections on the Digital Age

Yuniq - My perspective on life

Today, I took a moment to reflect on our existence in the Information Age, significantly shaped by the smartphone. My views on this are multifaceted: Is it feasible to navigate daily life without a smartphone? Do I often feel tethered to my device? Additionally, are there hidden drawbacks to our constant connectivity?

  • Most of the activities today are incomplete without a smartphone. With smartphones now being the centerpiece of daily life, offering means not only to communicate but also seek information and guidance; consume different types of services. Although life is possible without one, the sheer usefulness and connected nature of these devices make it difficult to imagine contemporary society sans-a-smartphone.
  • Of course, there are times when I have the impression that my phone is controlling me. The inflow of constant notifications and the feeling to check for updates is abundant. More often than not, I feel like my phone is literally chained to me; and drawing that focused attention elsewhere takes an immense amount of mental energy.
  • Definitely. One of the downsides to always being connected is inevitably that of obliterating any line between work and life, and another side effect is information overload. It can have an effect on social interactions and mental health as well, because the expectation to be "always-on" also carries with it a level of anxiety away from being able to make time your own.
